Dad used to take all of us to look
for arrowheads after the blowing winds in Colorado, near Denver. We
would spend hours looking and searching, sometimes with sand blowing
in our eyes. Dad could see them from his tractor while working
on the dry land. He would always stop what he was doing to pick
up an arrowhead. I was never very good at finding arrowheads and Dad
would find them in my footprints. Boy! Did that upset me!
One of my father's loves was oil painting and he enjoyed painting the beautiful scenes that he saw while hunting and fishing. Dad dreamed of doing lots of painting after retiring from his hard work as a dry land farmer. Shortly after retiring his eyesight turned bad and he lost his eyesight in one eye due to a detached retina. Dad fell into deep depressions because he would not be able to continue his love for painting wild life art. My sister tried to get him interested in many crafts and art to no success. Then one day she took him some Fimo clay to work with and he had the idea of sculpting arrowheads. He went into production and created framed arrowhead collections and bolo ties among other items. The fimo clay started the creative juices flowing and he was on his way. Months later he had the idea of doing some oil painting, only this time not on oil canvas boards but on the back of his two car garage. He finished 3 beautiful panels of mountain scenes. During the process he decided to create some rock waterfalls and ponds. It all turned out fantastic and Dad was happy again. It's been a couple years now since Dad passed away. On this "Father's Day" I just wanted to share his talents and creative spirit with you. He did all this with only one eye and liked being called "Chief One Eye". So the necklace pattern we are going to be working on was inspired by my Dad. The finished necklace has one of his arrowheads as a center piece and the animal fetishes at the bottom represent the many animals that he loved. The colors are some of Dad's favorites.
