Welcome to Lesson #10

 ( Looking at different ways to create straps and closures.
Adding warp threads for the straps

#1. You will see pictures of different ways to make straps. You can get an idea of what kind of strap you prefer.
#2. Learn how to add the warp threads for the straps.  In project #1 we will add braided end ties to make it adjustable for differnt necklines.

The woven main part of the necklace has no beads.

This necklace just has a small amount of needleweaving andstrung beads
and coral make
the straps. Tie
ends for adjustable lengths.

The weaving with the painted Indian dish on the right is a detachable brooch that can be pinned to the main part of the necklace. The carved Indian head is also detachable. Here you can see the close up of the straps, notice the needleweaving patches between the white tusk shells on the straps.

 

Extra thick Indian necklace straps.
Gold clasp closure.
Sunset necklace has woven button and button hole closure. Inca necklace with wrapped cord for button hole type closure. Close up of closure. This is a wrapped cord with metal birds at the ends.  They fit through a botton hole type closure.

Add waxed linen for straps and adding beads to the straps
#7How to add the linen for the straps. Pins help to secure the threads
so you can get the tightness you need.
If you add beads at this point it helps hide the transition point of pendant to straps. You may need to add more graph paper. Use pins to keep the warps straight.

How to decrease the threads.

This shows both side being woven evenly. Weave the top to the desired length. Start decreasing the warp pairs. You can see it's angling in. This knot helps secure the threads Use a bead to hide threads. It will
It will probably take one with a large hole.

I decided to use this long bead and not hide the knot because my design is primitive and the knot looks good.  Also I needed extra warps for added thickness to the braided ties.

Now I have 3 sets of threads with 4 strands each.
